Vesuvius cyber security incident update

Vesuvius, a UK-based metal company, became a subject of a cyber incident. The incident was reported on 6th February 2023 by Vesuvius to the London Stock Exchange. We look at more details of the security incident to try and find the current status of the security incident.

Vesuvius released a public statement on February 6, 2023. It acknowledged that unauthorized access to the company’s systems was detected.

As a result of this cyber attack, the company shut down the affected systems. There is no update in terms of the extent and magnitude of the issue affecting Vesuvius servers.

Here is the full text of the statement released by Vesuvius:

Vesuvius plc, a global leader in molten metal flow engineering and technology, is currently managing a cyber incident. The incident has involved unauthorised access to our systems.

Immediately upon becoming aware of unauthorised activity on our networks, we have taken the necessary steps to investigate and respond to the incident, including shutting down affected systems. We are working with leading cyber security experts to support our investigations and identify the extent of the issue, including the impact on production and contract fulfilment.

There has been no further statement on this cause from Vesuvius. In the absence of further details, it remains unclear if Vesuvius faced a ransomware attack or some sort of information theft attack. It is learned that Vesuvius is working with cyber-security professionals to remediate the situation. The exact impact on Vesuvius operations is unknown.

On a similar note, there has not been any public disclosure of ransom demands or ransomware incidents by any key ransomware group. It remains to be seen how this cyber incident pans out over the next few weeks.

Shares of Vesuvius went down on 7 February 2023. However, as of today, Vesuvius shares have made a recovery on the London Sock Exchange and are trading up by almost 3 percent. Vesuvius has a market capitalization of £1,074.55 million on the London Stock Exchange.
