Dell Vostro 3420 series laptops were released in 2021. All the other models were released after the 3420 series laptops.
All the Dell Vostro desktops and laptops have been tested by Dell for upgrading to Windows 11. But, there is a significant number of Vostro laptops that are incompatible with Windows 11.
Can I install Windows 11 on unsupported Vostro desktops or laptops?
Yes, you can install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware and processorsl. This requires registry tweaks. However, we do not recommend installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware for the following reasons:
- Access to Windows 11 security updates is not guaranteed on unsupported hardware
- There is a higher chance of system malfunction due to the underlying incompatibility between software and hardware
Before moving ahead, we have a quick update about the emerging situation of Windows 10 becoming end of life in October 2025.
Windows 10 Extended Security Updates are free for retail consumers in Europe, except for people in Switzerland and United Kingdom. For people outside Europe, you could get 1 year of free access to Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 by encashing Microsoft reward points or backing up your computer’s settings to OneDrive. Detailed instructions can be read here.
- Windows 10 became end of life on 14 October 2025.
- You could get access to Extended Security Updates for Windows 10. This would allow access to the latest security updates released for Windows 10 after 14 October 2025.
- If you do not have access to the Extended Security Update program of Windows 10, the last security update for your computer is KB5066791. It was released on 14 October 2025.
- You must deploy this security update, KB5066791, on the Windows 10 computer. By doing so, your computer’s security will have been updated to the recommended status as of 14 October 2025.
- KB5068781 is the first extended security update released for Windows 10 version 22H2. ESU key is required to install this security update on your Windows 10 computer. ESU key can be had by encashing 1000 Microsoft reward points. Or, you could buy for $30 a year. Or, you could setup Backup of computer settings to Microsoft’s cloud to get free access to the ESU program for Windows 10 between October 2025 to October 2026.
Dell Vostro running on Windows 10
For Dell Vostro desktops or laptops running on Windows 10, it is important to note that Windows 10 will become EOL or end of life on 14 October 2025. After that date, access to security updates for Windows 10 will end.
For Vostro computers compatible with Windows 11, we suggest upgrading Windows 10 to Windows 11 using the Windows Update program before 14 October 2025.
For Vostro computers incompatible with Windows 11, you do have an option to enroll in the paid subscription of ESU or Extended Security Updates for Windows 10. The details of ESU program pricing has also been shared.
Or, you could continue using Windows 10 sans security updates. This is not a recommended solution because your Vostro computer would be prone to increased risks. However, Windows 10 operating system will not cease to work after 14 October 2025. That is the bottomline, and there are people who are still continuing to use Windows 7 from much earlier years.
