Samsung M31 is a mid-range mobile phone that has been manufactured in India. The phone carries a retail price of Rs. 19,999 and goes on offer for sale between Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 18,000 in January 2021. So, should you buy a Samsung M31 in 2021?
To begin with, we feel that Samsung M31 is suitable for people who like to use their mobile phones for generic calling, photography and Internet. If you like to play online games, Samsung M31 may not give a satisfactory gaming experience.
But, before considering to buy Samsung M31, I will like to present a few salient points that should help you decide about the M31:Samsung M31 comes with Samsung’s own processor -Exynos 9611 with 2.3GHz octa-core (4×2.3GHz + 4×1.7GHz). This makes it one of the fastest processors for the price offered. The phone has 6 GB RAM and internal storage of 64 GB or 128 GB in the different models on offer for sale. Generally speaking, 128 GB is sufficient for normal usage of a mobile phone. However, one of the biggest points in favour of M31 is the fact that is allows you to upgrade the ROM storage up to 512 GB. You get 2 SIM slots and a slot of add a micro SD card. Extending internal storage space of M31 with an micro SD card is a big plus for the phone. Do bear in mind though that the usable space on 128 GB Samsung M31 is close to 108 GB while on a 64 GB Samsung M31, the usable space is close to 49 GB. If you like to do a lot of videos, then go go for a 128 GB model of Samsung M31.
The camera quality is decent, and the rear cameras allow you to take pictures with 64 MP camera lens. There is a catch here. The phone, in default format, takes pictures in only 16 MP. To take pictures with 64 MP quality, you will need to manually use the option to take images with 64 MP camera lens. This has been done to conserve the storage space; but, on face of it, this makes taking good quality pictures a tedious 2 step process. Change the camera lens to 64 MP and then shoot. In other words, this is not a very user friendly approach towards bundling 64 MP lens and shooting with 16 MP as a default. Selfie camera of 32 MP is fine in terms of taking good quality images from the front camera.
The Samsung M31 comes with an auto-call recording feature that is in-built into the mobile. This is a good feature to have as an in-box thing. Many smartphones lack an automatic call recording functionality, and you will need to download third party applications from Google Play Store to record calls. If you are the type of a person who likes to record all calls, M31 is suitable right out of the box.
Battery capacity of 6000 mAH is a strong point for the Samsung M31. Fast charging with an in-box wired charger allows the battery to fully charge in a little over one hour. Samsung M31’s charger will charge the phone at 15 W. On a similar basis, Super AMOLED display is a positive for the phone. Infact, display has always been a strong point of Samsung phones. We would have hoped for support for wireless charging, but Samsung seems to have held back the feature of wireless charging for more advanced phone models, such as the S series of Samsung mobile phones.
Another important point is the ability of the M31’s operating system to be upgraded from Android 10 operating system to Android 11 operating system. Samsung released the latest firmware on 12 January, 2021 that would allow you to download the firmware and upgrade the phone’s mobile operating system to Android 11. To upgrade from Android 10 to Android 11, you will need to download the firmware – M315FXXU2BUAC.
The M31 does not support NFC, and it appears that the NFC support is blocked by Samsung for the more advanced S series mobile phones. Near Field Communications (NFC) is an advanced technology in Samsung Smartphones which enables radio communication between devices when brought in close proximity. NFC ensures seamless data sharing and has few more applications and advantanges attached to it. To be fair though, NFC feature is not so commonly available in the mid-range phones.
Lastly, the M31 mobile phone is not water proof. There is no mention of the IP rating on the Samsung website for M31, and this is given to assume that M31 is neither water proof nor splash proof. But, I will like to admit that not many phones in this range of cost have water resistant or water proof ratings anyways.
In all, if you want a decent looking phone that is not a burden on your finances, Samsung M31 should rank as one of the two final options for a mid range mobile phone in India.
