KB5050009 for Windows 11 24H2 – Post-deployment issues

KB5050009 is a cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 edition. It was released on 14 January 2025 under the ‘Patch Tuesday’ project.

There have been some significant audio issues reported by system administrators after deployment of KB5050009 on Windows 11 24H2 editions. These issues are now fixed in KB5050094.

Audio issues

The primary impact after installing KB5050009 is on audio of the system. There have been user complaints about failed audio output through the system. The DAC or Digital to Analogue Converters are failing after installation of KB5050009.

The impact can be felt on sound through Bluetooth headsets or USB sound devices.

Microsoft has acknowledge the issue as per the update reported on the site:

After installing this security update, you might experience issues with USB audio devices. You are more likely to experience this issue if you are using a USB 1.0 audio driver based DAC (Digital to Analog converter) in your audio setup. This issue might cause USB audio devices to stop working, preventing audio playback.

DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters) are commonly used in scenarios where users need to improve the quality of their audio systems. A few scenarios where they are used are home audio systems, professional music studios and portable music players.

Resulting from this issue, the Device Manager might display the error ‘This device cannot start. (Code 10) Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API’.

There have been other reports my some users about:

  • Failed video output after installing KB5050009 – we are unable to validate these claims
  • Failed microphone on the system after installing KB5050009 – we are unable to validate this claim too

Solution – Audio issues KB5050009

Microsoft released an updated patch to resolve audio issues resulting after installing KB5050009 on Windows 11 24H2 editions.

Audio issues reported in KB5050009 are fixed in KB5050094 released on 28 January 2025. This is a preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and corresponds to OS build 26100.3037.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5050108) – 26100.3023 is part of KB5050094. This preview update will be included in the next month’s cumulative update for Windows 11. So, you may skip this and wait for the main cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 (unless you are experiencing audio issues).
