Garmin Fenix 6 Firmware version 21.80 – released 6th June 2022

Garmin has released the latest firmware version 21.80 for Fenix 6 devices on 6th June 2022. This follows up on the previous release of firmware version 21. Firmware 21 was released on 10th May 2022. Fenix 6 users had experienced multiple issues post-deployment of the firmware version 21 on the Fenix 6 devices. You can read about some of these issues on the page for Fenix 6 firmware 21.

The firmware version 21.80 comes within four weeks of the previous firmware version. It strives to provide a fix for many bugs. The latest firmware is being rolled out in phases. As of now, only 10 percent of the eligible Fenix 6 devices have received the latest firmware update version 21.80.

What issues are fixed in firmware 21.80 for Fenix 6 devices?

Fenix 6 devices faced multiple issues post-installation of firmware 21 on the watch. Some of these issues or bugs have been fixed in firmware version 21.80. In fact, the release 21.80 seems to be a bug-fix release for the Fenix 6 devices. Some bugs that have been resolved include:

  • Fixed an issue where Run/Walk/Idle total time didn’t equal Total Time displayed on watch/Garmin Connect (now all times when totaled should match Total Time).
  • Fixed an issue where the user could not delete a Strength workout from the device.
  • Fixed an issue with Metronome hotkey not working in the Walk activity.
  • Fixed issue in the Jumpmaster activity where the listed elevation data would not properly update.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the device from booting up properly.
  • Fixed a possible crash when completing Strength workouts that didn’t have any rep counting steps.
  • Fixed issue where “Battery in Days” would report 0 in Connect IQ apps.
  • Other minor improvements and bug fixes.

From our perspective, it is a relief to see that the issues with the battery monitor, Strength workouts and boot loops on Fenix 6 are resolved in firmware 21.80.

How can I install firmware 21.80 on Fenix 6 watches?

The recommended approach to installing firmware 21.80 on Fenix 6 devices has to be through the Garmin Express application. Alternatively, you can install firmware 21.80 through the Garmin Connect app.

In both these cases, you will need the firmware to be made available for your Fenix 6 device by Garmin. Since this is a phased rollout, it may take some time for the firmware to be automatically made available for your device. In some cases, this may even take up to 4 weeks after the firmware has been released.

In the event you are experiencing any issues on your Fenix 6 device after having deployed firmware version 21, you may opt to install the beta firmware version 21.80 on the Fenix 6 device. The beta software 21.80 will need to be deployed manually. You will need to download the firmware files from the beta section of the Garmin website. Before you can do so, you will also need to register for the beta program for Fenix 6 on the Garmin website.

We still suggest using Garmin Express as the preferred route to updating firmware on Garmin Fenix 6 devices.

Update firmware 21.80 on Fenix 6 using Garmin Express

Garmin Express is an application that can be installed on the computer.

Once Garmin Express has been installed, you will need to connect your Fenix 6 device to the computer. This will enable Garmin Express to link the Fenix 6 device with your account.

When the firmware version 21.80 becomes available for Fenix 6 device, Garmin Express will pull the firmware files to the computer. Here is how you can update firmware on Fenix 6 devices using Garmin Express:

  • Launch Garmin Express on the computer.
  • Connect Garmin Fenix 6 device to the computer using the cable.
  • If the firmware shows up on Garmin Express, install it on the system.
  • The device should remain connected to the computer.
  • Once the firmware has been downloaded and installed on the computer, it gets pushed out to the Fenix 6 device.

You will receive a notification of the completed firmware update on the Fenix 6 device. The process of firmware update remains unchanged for all the Fenix 6 devices including Fenix 6 Standard Edition, Fenix 6S, Fenix 6S Pro, Fenix 6X Pro, Fenix 6 Sapphire Solar, Fenix 6X Sapphire Solar, Fenix 6X Sapphire Solar Pro.

The firmware update files are generally around 50 MB in size. With good Internet connectivity, the entire firmware update process through the Garmin Express application should not take more than half an hour.

Update firmware 21.80 on Fenix 6 using Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect is Garmin’s app that works as an interface between the smartphone and Garmin smartwatch. Garmin Connect is available for Android devices and iOS devices alike. As of writing this, Garmin Connect is compatible with Android operating system version 7 and later. It works well with iOS version 13 and later.

Once Garmin Connect has been downloaded, you will need to create a Garmin Connect account on the Garmin website. To update the firmware to 21.80 version, please follow the instructions below:

  • Launch Garmin Connect app on the paired smartphone.
  • If the firmware 21.80 has been made available for your device, Garmin Connect will pull the firmware on the paired smartphone.
  • Fenix 6 watch must be nearby for the Garmin Connect app to synchornize with the device contents.
  • Garmin Connect app will push the update files automatically through the paired connection to the Fenix 6 device.
  • Once the firmware version 21.80 has been updated, you will receive a notification on the watch.

This completes the firmware update to version 21.80 on the Fenix 6 device.

Garmin Fenix 6 Firmware 21.80 for APAC region

The firmware 21.80 for Garmin Fenix 6 devices is not available for the APAC region as we write this. Therefore, it is advised to not install firmware file 21.80 manually if your device is registered in the APAC region.

It may be a good idea to wait until the firmware files are made available in the APAC region.
