Garmin Fenix 6 firmware update 22.10

Garmin released the firmware version 22.10 for Fenix 6 devices on the 14th of June 2022. This firmware update supersedes the firmware version 21.80 that was released on the 6th of June 2022. The latest firmware update was pushed to resolve issues that cropped up after the firmware 21.80 was deployed on the Fenix 6 devices. We look at the various bug fixes that are part of the firmware update 22.10. We also discuss about the issues that have happened post-deployment of the firmware version 22.10 on the Fenix 6 devices.

As of August 2022, the firmware version 22.10 for Garmin Fenix 6 remains the current firmware version. The beta version of firmware on Fenix 6 has moved to firmware version 22.80. If you are a participant in the beta firmware release process of Garmin Fenix 6, you can update the beta firmware to version 20.80 on your Fenix 6 device.

  • It may be a good point to mention that the firmware update 22.10 is available for all the Fenix 6 devices.
  • The update has been pushed live to all the eligible Fenix 6 devices as we write this.
  • As of writing this, the firmware version 22.10 is the latest firmware version for the Fenix 6 smartwatches.

Fenix 6 Issues after firmware update to version 22.10

Post update to firmware version 22.10 on Fenix 6 watch, your watch may appear to have a corrupted file system.

  • The battery indicator may not work properly. It may show wild swings from full charge to low battery levels under 10 percent.
  • The watch may reboot in the middle of a running activity.
  • GPS may go off or show inaccurate GPS tracks for the activities.
  • The message notification or call notification vibrator may last for an extended duration of 20 or more seconds.
  • The watch screen may become grey intermittently.
  • The Fenix 6 watch may not show any heart rate readings.
  • Fenix 6 devices may not show any step counts.
  • Body battery scores and stress readings may not work anymore on the Fenix 6 watch.
  • The menu response on the Fenix 6 watch may look sluggish. Simple menu operations may take an extended time to respond.
  • You may be unable to connect the watch to the Garmin Connect app.
  • You may be unable to receive notifications from the paired smartphone on your Fenix 6 smartwatch.
  • The battery of the Fenix 6 smartwatch may drain at a faster rate. You may be out of charge in a day.
  • Temperature readings may not work.
  • Barometer feature may not respond.
  • Your watch may automatically disconnect the incoming call on the paired phone.
  • The watch may demonstrate abnormal behavior on any other feature after the firmware update to version 22.10.

Essentially, these are multiple issues that have been reported after deploying firmware version 22.10 on the Fenix 6 smartwatch. We do expect a new firmware anytime soon for Fenix 6.

To resolve these issues, you could take the following steps:

  • Restart the Fenix 6 smartwatch. Try to unpair it with the smartphone. Reboot once again. Now, create the paired connection with the smartphone.
  • If you have the Garmin Explore app on the Fenix 6 watch, uninstall it. Once uninstalled, reboot the watch. Now check for the Fenix 6 watch performance.
  • If you have the Golf app on the Fenix 6 watch, check for the latest version of the app. Also, do check the notification settings of the Garmin Golf app.
  • If the two above-mentioned steps do not resolve the issue, you can do a hard reset of the watch. Before doing a hard reset of the Fenix 6 watch, do take backups of your fitness data.
  • If the hard reset fails to resolve the multiple issues on the Fenix 6 smartwatch, please call the Garmin customer care in your country. If your watch is in warranty, you may be eligible for a replacement watch.
  • If your watch is out of warranty and you are experiencing similar issues, speak to Garmin customer care. You may be eligible to get a refurbished watch without incremental expenses. You may have to bear the cost of sending the watch back to Garmin. Do check with the Garmin customer care team about the charges for shipping the watch.

Fenix 6 firmware version 22.10 – Bug fixes

Garmin has confirmed the following bug fixes as part of the Fenix 6 firmware version 22.10:

  • Fixed an issue where Run/Walk/Idle total time didn’t equal Total Time displayed on watch/Garmin Connect (now all times when totaled should match Total Time).
  • Fixed an issue where user could not delete a Strength workout from device.
  • Fixed an issue with Metronome hot key not working in the Walk activity.
  • Fixed an issue in the Jumpmaster activity where the listed elevation data would not properly update.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent device from booting up properly.
  • Fixed a possible crash when completing Strength workouts that didn’t have any rep counting steps.
  • Fixed an issue where “Battery in Days” would report 0 in Connect IQ apps.
  • Fixed an issue causing incorrect cycling VO2 max values.
  • Fixed an issue where golf courses could fail to load.

Fenix 6 devices eligible for the firmware upgrade to 22.10

Firmware version 22.10 is available for all the Fenix 6 watch models. These include:

  • Fenix 6 Standard edition
  • Fenix 6S
  • Fenix 6S Pro Solar
  • Fenix 6 Pro and Sapphire
  • Fenix 6S Pro and Sapphire
  • Fenix 6X Pro Solar
  • Fenix 6X Pro and Sapphire

Manual updates for stable firmware release for Garmin Fenix 6 watches are not recommended. It is suggested that you must use Garmin Express or Garmin Connect app to upgrade the firmware on your Fenix 6 smartwatch to the latest version.

Fenix 6 – Upgrade to firmware version 22.10 using Garmin Express

  • Please connect your Fenix 6 watch to the computer using the USB cable provided.
  • Launch the Garmin Express application on your computer.
  • Let Garmin Express identify your watch mode.
  • Garmin Express will pull the latest firmware version files from the Garmin server.
  • Allow the computer to sync the firmware files with the Garmin Fenix 6 smartwatch.

For practical and performance reasons, Garmin Express must be used as a preferred way to update firmware on the Garmin smartwatches. These include all the Fenix 6 smartwatches.

Fenix 6 – Upgrade to firmware 22.10 using the Garmin Connect app.

  • Do ensure that your smartphone is adequately charged. On a similar basis, do ensure that your smartwatch is charged.
  • Do ensure that the watch has a good quality paired connection with the smartphone.
  • Fenix 6 smartwatch and the paired smartphone are recommended to be in close proximity to each other.
  • If the firmware update is available for your Fenix 6 watch device, the Garmin Connect app will pull the firmware files from the Garmin servers.
  • Once Garmin Connect has downloaded the full firmware files, it will sync with the Fenix 6 watch. During the sync process, the firmware files get pushed out to the Garmin Fenix 6 smartwatch.
  • The firmware update may take place automatically through the Garmin Connect app as and when the firmware 22.10 files are available for your Fenix 6.

Summary

Fenix 6 firmware 22.10 has been made available to all the eligible non-APAC Fenix 6 devices. There have been user-reported issues post-upgrade to firmware version 22.10 on the Fenix 6 watches. We do suggest performing the mitigation steps stated above. We do expect Garmin to release the next firmware version for Fenix 6 soon.
