Android Apps on Windows 11 – Insider and Dev channel release

Android apps will be supported on the Windows 11 operating system. The support for Android apps will be provided through the ‘Windows sub-system for Android‘. The Windows sub-system will interface with the Amazon app store to help you load Android apps on a Windows 11 computer. However, Android support on Windows 11 is likely to become active sometime next year in 2022. Here, we will discuss a few important points about the Android apps on Windows 11.

Is Android app support available on Windows 11?

As of writing this (October 2021), Android app support is not available on the Windows 11 operating system. There are plans to make the Android app support available on Windows 11 sometime in 2022. We expect that this may happen in the second quarter of 2022. Microsoft has, however, started offering support for the Android apps since last week in the Windows Insider Beta channel. So, effectively speaking, we can say that the Android apps support and behavior is being tested through the Windows Insider channel. Eventually, the Android app support should expand to the DEV channel and the Microsoft’s Windows 11 stable release.

The bottom-line is, you will need to wait until 2022 before Android app support becomes a part of the Microsoft Windows 11 operating system.

Is Android app support on Windows 11 available outside US?

No, Android apps are not supported outside the US Windows Insider beta channel (as of October 2021). Android app support is available to the Windows Insider Beta channel ONLY in the United States, as of today. This should expand to the DEV channel pretty soon. If you have the Windows Insider channel, but you are outside the United States, you will not be able to make use of the Android apps yet. This is on account of unavailability of the Amazon app store outside the United States. Microsoft uses the Amazon app store to front end the Android apps on the Windows 11 system.

While accessing the Amazon appstore, you may get a red banner error –“This app will not work on your device”. This may happen when you are trying to access apps on the Amazon app store. Please do not fret over this error, especially when you are outside the US. Amazon appstore is unavailable outside the United States. Therefore, for now, you won’t be able to use any Android apps on the Beta channel computers outside the US.

It may be worthy of mentioning that the restriction on supporting the Android apps to the US is a short term restriction. This is more of Microsoft’s compulsion as the Amazon app store is available only in the US. And, Microsoft Windows 11 sub-system for Android relies on the Amazon app store to pull or install Android apps.

Eventually, the Android eco-system on the Windows 11 operating system will be available to the Windows 11 users, irrespective of the geographic location of the users.

What is the eligibility to run Android apps on Windows 11?

There are strict eligibility conditions for the Android app support on a Windows 11 computer. Eligibility conditions are stricter than the eligibility for installing the Windows 11 operating system. To install Windows sub-system for Android, your computer must conform to the following eligibility conditions:

  • You must be using a processor that is at least 8th generation Intel i3 processor or,
  • AMD Ryzen™ 3000 processor or,
  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 8c, or higher processor
  • RAM of at least 8 GB.
  • Solid State Drive (SSD) on the system.
  • Virtualization must be enabled on your Windows 11 computer.

Once your computer hardware complies with the eligibility criteria, you can install the Windows sub-system for Android.

Before attempting an installation of the Windows subsystem for Android, do ensure that you have updated the Microsoft store and ensure it is running the most recent version.

Windows subsystem for Android will automatically install on your Windows 11 computer when you download the Amazon appstore. So, to install the Windows subsystem for Android, you may:

If you wish to install the WSA manually, you can download the files through the Microsoft store. To do so, you will need a download link to install the msixbundle on your computer. We are not getting into the details of the manual installation of the Windows subsystem for Android. We will discuss in a detailed post on a separate note.
