Airtel India has announced that its network is ready for 5G rollout of services for the Indian users. 5G networks are currently unavailable in India. The two biggest telecom providers of India – Bharti Airtel and Mukesh Ambani’s Jio networks, are locked in a close battle for network supremacy in India. Reliance’s Jio has already announced that it will launch 5G operations in the second half of 2021.
Bharti Airtel intends to use the existing 4G spectrum to offer 5G services as of now. This may look like a stop gap arrangement, because true 5G services would require a true 5G spectrum. Both companies await the allocation and availability of the 5G spectrum by the Government of India.
Gopal Vittel, CEO of Bharti Airtel, said – “We believe India has the potential to become a global hub for 5G innovation. To make that happen we need the ecosystem to come together – applications, devices and network innovation. We are more than ready to do our bit,”. Airtel has demonstrated 5G abilities on the mid-band 1800 MHz spectrum and is ready to roll out 5G over the mid-bands of 2100 MHz and 2300 MHz. The network readiness for the sub bands – 800 GHz and 900 GHz has also been tested.
Rollout of 5G networks in India will allow the users to get up to 10x higher speeds on the Internet. This is likely to give a big push to the already growing e-Commerce market in India.
